Sasha Kerkmann Hood

Midwifery Assistant

Sasha’s path to birth work began in 2006, when she traveled to Durban, South Africa, to work alongside midwives through Child Family Health International — an experience that first revealed to her the raw power of birth and planted the seed for a lifelong calling.

In the two decades since, Sasha has supported over 250 births as a doula, birth assistant, and midwife. She trained through the National Midwifery Institute, with clinical placements spanning California, Texas, and South Africa. Her path has taken her through homebirth practices in San Francisco and Austin, a birth center in San Francisco, and doula work with Carriage House Birth in Brooklyn and Manhattan, New York, giving her a rich, wide-ranging view of how birth is held across communities, cultures, and care models.

Alongside her clinical path, Sasha has spent 18+ years coaching women through life’s most challenging transitions. She helps women look deeply in the mirror — gently guiding them toward softening, self-understanding, and the recognition that leaning into challenge, rather than away from it into comfort or protection, is where real growth happens. She is highly skilled at creating safety, both one-on-one and in groups, that allows women to access who they truly are — moving toward empowerment, sovereignty, and connection rather than fear, shutdown, or trauma response.

Sasha is married to her husband of 8 years, with whom she works alongside coaching and guiding couples in deepening communication within their relationships. Together, they spend time in nature with their son, born in 2019 in Germany. Giving birth abroad taught Sasha so much about slowing down in the early postpartum period, and it deepened her commitment to helping other women build villages and communities that leave them feeling deeply resourced and held in that first year after birth, as a mother rebirths herself. In this season of her own life, Sasha has come to deeply value standing beside women as they live through this discovery and awakening into the women they were born to be, strengthening their relationships and coming to know themselves ever more deeply.

Sasha graduated from NMI in 2018, and is currently completing the final steps toward becoming a California licensed midwife. She brings years of clinical experience, a steady and deeply attuned presence in the birth room, and a rare integration of clinical skill and emotional depth to every family she supports.
